Insurance Rates Many auto insurance companies will offer discounts on your monthly insurance rate if you attend and pass a defensive driving course.    When an insurance company takes a driver on as a client and insures them, they want to make sure that the driver is safe and cautious while operating their vehicle. If a driver has frequent accidents, that will cost the insurance company money – and they are not in the business of losing money.    By offering their drivers a discount on their insurance rate if they take a defensive driving course, they are giving them an incentive to drive more cautiously and safely. In return, the insurance company feels at ease that they are insuring a safe and responsible driver, that hopefully will not cost them money.    You can contact your insurance company to see if you can negotiate a better auto insurance rate if you attend and pass a defensive driving course. If the insurance company does offer a discount, you will then have to find a defensive driving course to take.    Insurance companies want a driver to take a defensive driving course that is accredited and approved by the state in which you live as well as the court and Department of Motor Vehicles.    Once you find an accredited course to take, simply sign up, complete the course and when you pass the course, you will be given a certificate of completion. Present that certificate of completion to your insurance company and within a few weeks, your new (lower) insurance rate will take effect.
