Tire Blows Out While You Are Driving

It’s hard to think of something more terrifying than driving down the road and having a tire blowout while the vehicle is in motion. What do you do? Are you going to crash? Is my vehicle going to flip over?

These are very normal and common questions to have in this type of situation and we have the answers to those questions for you!

The very first thing you want to do in the event that you blow a tire while driving is to remain calm. Panicking will only make the situation worse.

Hold the steering wheel firmly with both hands and remove your foot from the gas pedal, slowly. Do not under any circumstances hit the brakes. You must have the vehicle slow down gradually and naturally. Hitting the brakes can cause the vehicle to go out of control.

The vehicle will begin moving in the direction of the blown tire. Your natural instinct will be to want to correct this and straighten out the vehicle, but it’s very important to not do that. Simply try to maintain the direction the vehicle is going in while it slows down.

Once the vehicle is slowed, carefully and safely drive to the side of the road and pull over. At this point it is a good idea to turn your hazard signal on and let other drivers know that you are dealing with a safety situation.

Once stopped safely on the side of the road or in a turn out, shut the vehicle off, exit the vehicle and assess the damage. It’s situations like this as to why it is very important to know how to change a tire on a vehicle.

If you do know how to change a tire and you have a spare tire, safely replace the blown out tire with the spare tire. If you don’t have a spare tire or are unable to change the tire on your own, you will need to call emergency services for help. If you have a service such as AAA, you can contact them and they will send someone to change the tire for you if you have a spare, if not, they can tow the vehicle for you.

If you are reading this you now understand one, the importance of having a spare tire and tire jack within your vehicle and two, the importance of knowing how to change a tire.

Drive safe out there!
