How To Register For New York’s 5 Hour Pre-Licensing Course

Registration Process

There are many different pre-licensing courses throughout New York, some are solely online, while others are in-person classes. Registering to take a New York pre-licensing course is very simple, with the very first step being – find a course that works for you! You must decide whether you want to take the course in an in-person classroom type setting, or online. Once you find the course that works best for you, simply sign up and enroll in the course, pay the course fee and you are good to go! It’s that easy!

It’s very important to make sure that the New York 5 hour pre-licensing course that you are signing up for is approved by the New York State DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles).

For a full list of online courses that are approved by the NYSDMV, you can visit this website: https://dmv.ny.gov/driver-training/online-pre-licensing-course-providers.

Now let’s take a look at online courses vs. in-person courses.

The state of New York does not allow anyone under the age of 18 to take the 5 hour pre-licensing course online, they must take the course in-person. In order to take either the in-person course or online course, you must hold a valid New York state learner’s permit.

In-Person Courses

Taking an in-person course requires you to physically go somewhere to attend the course in a classroom style setting. Once you complete the course, you will receive a certification of completion that will also be sent to the New York State DMV.

If you learn better in-person in a classroom style setting, this may be a great option for you. Just understand that you will have to dedicate the better part of a day to attend and complete the course.

Online Courses

Taking an online course gives you a lot of flexibility when it comes to taking and completing the course. You are able to take the course anywhere there is an internet connection and you can start and stop the course whenever you want. This means that you can learn and complete the course at your own pace and in your own space.

This flexibility is a very attractive option for many people who take a pre-licensing course. Once the course is completed, a certification of completion will typically be emailed to the user. That certification of completion is also sent to the New York State DMV, automatically.

What Happens After You Finish The Course

Once the course is complete, as stated before, you will receive a certification of completion. Once the DMV receives notification that you have completed the course, you are then able to schedule your ‘on road’ driving test with the DMV.

You will then be one step closer to becoming a fully licensed driver!
