New York 5 Hour Pre-Licensing Course

What is the New York 5 hour pre-licensing course? 

This course is designed to teach new drivers the skills and information they need in order to become a safe and responsible driver. The pre-licensing course is fully approved by the New York State DMV, fulfilling all of their teaching and learning requirements. 

 

All new drivers throughout New York must complete the 5 hour pre-licensing course prior to scheduling their road test to obtain their drivers license. 

There are some prerequisites that must be met in order to take the course. Students must be at least 18 years of age and hold a valid New York learners permit

The course is online, which allows the user to take the course from the comfort of their own home and at their own pace. 

 

Throughout the course there are various sections that cover an array of material. Material such as:

  • New York State traffic laws
  • Risks that new drivers may face
  • Safe driving 
  • Defensive driving skills
  • Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs
  • Distracted driving
  • Traffic signals and road sign meanings

 

Once the course is completed, a certification of completion is issued and all completing information is sent directly to the New York State DMV. Once the information is received, the new driver is able to schedule their road test. The only step left to becoming a licensed driver is passing the road test! 

New York State does not allow those who are under the age of 18 to take the online 5 hour pre-licensing course. Teen drivers under the age of 18 must take the 5 hour course in person.
