What is the Pennsylvania Mature Driver Improvement Course?
The Pennsylvania Mature Driver Improvement Course is a state-approved safety program designed for drivers aged 55 and older. Authorized under Pennsylvania law, this course is approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT). The comprehensive curriculum covers defensive driving techniques, Pennsylvania traffic laws, the effects of aging and medications on driving abilities, and accident prevention strategies. Upon successful completion, participants receive a certificate that qualifies them for auto insurance premium discounts mandated by state law. The course is entirely online, allowing mature drivers to complete it at their own pace from the comfort of their home.
How much can I save on my insurance?
Pennsylvania state law mandates a minimum discount of 5% for drivers age 55 and older who complete this approved course. Some insurance companies provide discounts greater than 5%, with some offering up to 15% off your premium. The discount applies to automobile liability and physical damage insurance premiums for at least 36 months (3 years). If you meet the requirements for this premium discount, by law you cannot be denied the minimum discount regardless of your driving history. Contact your insurance provider to learn about their specific discount percentage, as some offer more than the required minimum.
Who is eligible to take this course?
Any Pennsylvania driver who is 55 years of age or older is eligible to take the Pennsylvania Mature Driver Improvement Course and is guaranteed the minimum 5% discount by state law. For drivers under 55, the law does not require insurance companies to provide the premium discount, though some companies may voluntarily offer discounts to younger drivers who complete the course. Contact your insurance company for information about their specific policies for drivers under 55. There are no other prerequisites or requirements for the course.
How long does the discount last?
Your insurance discount remains effective for at least 36 months (3 years) from the date of course completion, as mandated by Pennsylvania state law. Many insurance companies extend this period beyond the minimum requirement. After the discount period expires, you can take the Refresher course to renew your discount eligibility. Check with your insurance provider to understand their specific renewal policies and discount duration.

How long does the course take?
The Pennsylvania Basic Mature Driver Improvement course is 7 hours in length, as established by PennDOT requirements. Most students complete the course over multiple sessions, though you’re free to work at your own pace. Take as much time as you need to thoroughly understand the material and feel confident about the final test.
What if I don't pass the test?
The course includes a final test to evaluate your knowledge of the material covered. The final exam consists of multiple-choice questions, and you must earn a score of at least 80% to pass. If you don’t pass on your first attempt, don’t worry! You can review the course material and retake the test with unlimited retakes at no extra cost. We want you to succeed and will provide the support needed to help you earn your certificate and qualify for your insurance discount.
How do I get my certificate?
Upon successful completion of the course and passing the final test, your certificate of completion is immediately available for download. You can print it yourself or save a digital copy. Simply provide this certificate to your insurance company to apply for your premium discount. We also keep a record of your completion in case you need another copy in the future.
What is the difference between Basic and Refresher courses?
If you have never taken a Mature Driver Improvement course for an insurance discount before, you should take the Basic course first. The Basic course is 7 hours in length and provides comprehensive coverage of all required topics. Once you have completed the Basic course, you can take the 4-hour Refresher course every 3 years to maintain your insurance discount. The Refresher course covers the same essential topics but is shorter since you’ve already completed the foundational training.
