What is the Wisconsin Right-of-Way / Failure to Yield Course?

The Wisconsin Right-of-Way / Failure to Yield Course is a state-approved, two-hour online program required for drivers convicted of certain right-of-way violations in Wisconsin. It is designed to refresh drivers on Wisconsin traffic laws, right-of-way rules, and safe driving practices. Completion satisfies the Wisconsin DMV requirement and may also reduce your demerit point total by up to three points.

Who is required to take this course?

Any person convicted of a qualifying right-of-way violation in Wisconsin must complete this course — regardless of where they live. The Wisconsin DMV will send you a notification letter or email. Qualifying violations include Failure to Yield Right of Way (FYR), Illegal Turn (IT), Passing Illegally (PI/CPI), Driving on the Wrong Side of the Highway (DWS), Failure to Obey a Traffic Sign or Signal (FOS), and Backing Illegally (BI).

How long do I have to complete the course?

You must complete the course within six months of the date on your Wisconsin DMV notification letter or email. If you do not complete it within that window, your driving privileges will be suspended. If your license has already been suspended, you must complete the course before you can reinstate.

How long is the course?

The course is two hours long. It is entirely self-paced, so you can log in and out as many times as needed and complete it across multiple sessions. Your progress is saved automatically, and you can use any internet-connected device — desktop, laptop, tablet, or smartphone.

Is this course approved by the State of Wisconsin?

Yes. This course is fully approved by the State of Wisconsin and meets all Wisconsin DMV requirements for the Right-of-Way / Failure to Yield course mandate.

Will this course reduce my points?

Completing this course may reduce your Wisconsin demerit point total by up to three points through the Traffic Safety course component. Note that completing a Right-of-Way course through a private driver training school alone will not reduce your demerit points — the full Traffic Safety course must be completed to qualify for point reduction. See Wisconsin’s point system for full details.

What topics does the course cover?

The course covers a comprehensive range of topics including: Wisconsin right-of-way laws and traffic statutes, intersection and signal rules, yielding to pedestrians and emergency vehicles, safe passing and lane-change procedures, defensive driving strategies, distracted and impaired driving prevention, and techniques for sharing the road safely with all users.

What do I do with my certificate after completing the course?

After completing the course and passing the final exam, your Certificate of Completion will be sent to the email address you registered with. Submit it to the Wisconsin Division of Motor Vehicles to satisfy your requirement. If we have the DMV’s contact information on record, we will also send a copy on your behalf and notify you accordingly.

Why is your course only $22.95?

We believe drivers shouldn’t be penalized twice. Our $22.95 price is the lowest available for this state-approved course — and unlike other providers, what you see is what you pay. No surprise fees or upsells at the end of registration.

Is my personal data secure?

All data transmitted on our website is encrypted via HTTPS using Transport Layer Security (TLS) and Secure Sockets Layer (SSL).
