Also known as the Drug and Alcohol course or D.A.T.A. (Drug, Alcohol and Traffic Awareness) course, this FLHSMV-approved training must be completed before you can apply for your Florida learner's permit or driver's license.

    Our Florida Basic Driver Improvement (BDI) Course is the smart solution for keeping points off your driving record after receiving a traffic citation. This 4-hour FLHSMV-approved course, also known as traffic school or defensive driving, can be completed voluntarily to avoid points or as required by court order or DHSMV mandate.

    When you elect to take the BDI course within 30 days of your citation date, you'll prevent points from being added to your license and have adjudication of guilt withheld. That helps protect your driving record and your driving privileges. The course is also mandatory for certain violations including red light tickets, passing a stopped school bus, and if you're involved in crashes meeting specific criteria.

Florida course FAQ

Which Florida course do I need?

It depends on your situation:

  • Under 18 and getting your first license: the 6-hour Driver Education Traffic Safety (DETS) course, before you apply for your learner's permit.
  • 18 or older and getting your first license: the 4-hour Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education (TLSAE) course, also called the Drug and Alcohol course.
  • Got a traffic ticket in Orange or Osceola County: the 4-hour Basic Driver Improvement (BDI) course.
  • 55 or older and want an auto insurance discount: the 6-hour Mature Driver Insurance Discount course.

Is DDI approved by the FLHSMV?

Yes. Defensive Drivers Institute is an approved provider with the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) for our DETS, TLSAE, Basic Driver Improvement and Mature Driver Insurance Discount courses.

How is my completion reported?

When you pass a DETS, TLSAE or Basic Driver Improvement course, we report your completion to the FLHSMV electronically, so you don't have to deliver anything to the state yourself. You'll also receive a certificate of completion for your records. For the Mature Driver course, you'll receive a certificate to send to your insurance company.

My ticket isn't from Orange or Osceola County. Can I take DDI's BDI course?

Not at this time. DDI's online Basic Driver Improvement course is currently available only for citations issued in Orange County and Osceola County, so we're unable to accept enrollments for tickets from other Florida counties. Check your citation or contact your county's clerk of court for the options available to you.

Can I take the course on my phone?

Yes. All of our Florida courses are 100% online and work on phones, tablets and computers. Your progress is saved, so you can stop and pick up where you left off on any device.

What's the difference between TLSAE and DETS?

DETS is the 6-hour course for first-time drivers under 18. Since August 1, 2025, it's the course teens complete before applying for a learner's permit.

TLSAE is the 4-hour course for first-time drivers 18 and older. Florida also requires it for drivers under 21 whose license was suspended for driving with a blood alcohol level of .02 to .05 and who want a hardship license.
