How to Obtain a Copy of Your Driving Record
A driver’s record is based on a points system. When you receive a moving violation or traffic infriction, points are added to your record. Every driver starts out with 0 points on their license. The more points you have, the worse your driving record is.
There are various ways for you to check your driving record and we are going to cover those ways in this article.
What Your Driving Record Will Include
1. Personal Information:
- Name
- Address
- Date of Birth
- License number
2. License Status:
Current status of the driver’s license (e.g., valid, suspended, revoked)
3. Traffic Violations:
- Moving violations, such as speeding tickets
- Non-moving violations, such as parking tickets
4. Accidents:
- Information about accidents in which the driver was involved, including fault determination and any resulting points or penalties
5. DUI/DWI Convictions:
Records of convictions for driving under the influence (DUI) or driving while intoxicated (DWI)
6. Points on License:
Accumulated points or demerits associated with traffic violations
7. License Class and Restrictions:
- Class of driver’s license (e.g., commercial, non-commercial)
- Any specific restrictions or endorsements on the license
8. Suspensions or Revocations:
History of any license suspensions or revocations and the reasons for them
9. Date of First Licensure:
The date when the individual first obtained a driver’s license
10. License Expiry Date:
The expiration date of the current driver’s license
11. Special Notations:
Any notations that pertain to your driving record
What Your Driving Record Doesn’t Include
- Any violation that do not pertain to driving
- Criminal history not pertaining to driving
How You Can Get A Copy Of Your Driving Record
Contact your local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV)
You can find the contact information for your DMV online or by calling a general government information line. You can also call your local DMV or visit them in person.
Complete a request form. The DMV will provide you with a request form that you will need to fill out. The form will typically ask for your personal information, driver’s license number, and the type of record you need.
Submit your request and payment. You can submit your request in person, by mail, or online. You will also need to pay the required fee. It’s roughly $10 for a copy of your driving record.
Your Insurance Company
All insurance agents have access to your driving report. You can ask your insurance agent to access your driving report and oftentimes they will provide you with a copy or a rundown of the information.
Online
There are a ton of online solutions for obtaining your driving record. While these services are typically super fast, they are super expensive. They are by far the most expensive option when it comes to obtaining a copy of your driving record.
