From rain, snow, sleet and wind, these various weather conditions can have a serious impact on driver safety. Let’s take a look at a few different weather conditions that can affect a driver.

Rain: When rain hits the roadway it can reduce tire traction to the road. This means that stopping is harder. As water collects on the road and tire traction is reduced, drivers run the risk of hydroplaning. This is when the vehicle’s tires lose connection with the road and begin driving on top of a thin layer of water. This can make the vehicle near impossible to control. Also adjust your speed and slow down in rainy conditions.

Fog: Fog can reduce a driver’s visibility in a major way. Slow down and use your low beam headlights when driving in foggy conditions. Always avoid following vehicles too close in foggy conditions as well.

Snow, Sleet and Ice: When driving in icy conditions it is incredibly important to drive slowly and cautiously. If you live in an area where icy conditions on the roadway are a common occurrence, it’s best to equip your vehicle with special ‘winter tires’. These tires are designed to give the vehicle better traction. And just like other poor weather conditions, never follow a vehicle too closely.

Strong Winds: High winds can actually push and pull a vehicle around, especially larger vehicles such as SUVs or trucks. Hold the steering wheel tightly and adjust your speed as needed.

High Heat: You may not think that hot weather can affect a drivers driving ability, but it most certainly can. High heat can make a driver tired and worn out. Alway stay hydrated and if your vehicle has air conditioning, utilize it.

No matter what type of poor weather conditions you are driving in, it’s best to follow the same rule of thumb. Drive slow, drive cautious and don’t follow the vehicle in front of you closely.
